Standing stone – pair, Killadangan, Co. Mayo

At Killadangan in County Mayo, two standing stones rise from the landscape together, a pairing that immediately sets them apart from the solitary megaliths that more commonly punctuate the Irish countryside.

Pairs of standing stones are relatively uncommon, and their purpose remains genuinely debated among archaeologists. Some alignments appear oriented toward solar or lunar events; others may have marked boundaries, routeways, or burial sites. Whatever their original function, the fact that two were raised here rather than one suggests a deliberate and considered act, something relational rather than simply monumental.
