Stone Monuments
On the summit of a bog-covered hill in Shinnanagh, County Galway, a standing stone is doing its best to disappear.
Only its uppermost tip breaks the surface of the peat, and what little is visible appears to be white quartz, a material prehistoric communities in Ireland selected with some regularity, possibly for the way it catches light. How much of the stone lies buried beneath the bog, and how tall it once stood in open ground, remains unknown.
