Stone Monuments

Standing stone, Timoney Hills, Co. Tipperary

Scattered across undulating pasture in County Tipperary, well over two hundred standing stones occupy the townlands of Timoney Hills and Cullaun, making this one of the most densely concentrated groupings of such monuments anywhere in Ireland.

What makes the site genuinely puzzling is not just the sheer number of stones but the fact that they appear to follow no obvious pattern. They are not arranged in rows, they do not trace an avenue, and there is no clear astronomical alignment. The only exception is a single stone circle in the townland of Cullaun. The rest simply stand, or once stood, apparently without system.

When the Inspector of National Monuments surveyed the area in 1934 to 1936, he counted 221 stones still present across the two townlands, 173 in Timoney Hills and 48 in Cullaun. He recorded that they ranged from roughly 0.9 to 1.8 metres in height, with the larger ones averaging around 1.5 metres, and that all were of red sandstone or conglomerate. Even then, many had already been lost; a later map published in the Archaeological Survey of Ikerrin by Stout in 1984 recorded 245 stones in total, of which 70 had been removed, along with five cairns that had also disappeared. By the time of more recent field visits, dense scrub vegetation had made it impossible to locate at least some of the individual stones still marked on older maps. One complicating factor hangs over the whole assemblage: the stones sit within the landscaped estate of Timoney Park, formerly the Parker-Hutchinson estate, and their position within a designed landscape has led some to question whether all of them are genuinely prehistoric monuments or whether some may have been placed or rearranged as part of estate improvement work in a more recent era.
