Stepping stones, Clooninagh, Co. Galway

In the townland of Clooninagh in County Galway, a line of stepping stones crosses a stretch of water modest enough to ford on foot, yet significant enough that someone, at some point, took the trouble to place stones across it deliberately.

That act of practical engineering, repeated in countless river crossings and bog margins across Ireland, is easy to overlook. Yet stepping stones earn a place in the archaeological record precisely because they represent organised movement through a landscape, evidence of paths and routines worn into the ground long before roads arrived.
