Stone circle – five-stone, Grenagh, Co. Cork

In the shallow valley near Grenagh, opening eastward towards the Martin River basin, a small prehistoric stone circle once stood, and then, at some point between 1933 and 1963, it was gone.

No dramatic event is recorded, no documented demolition; it simply ceased to exist within that thirty-year window, leaving behind earlier descriptions as the only reliable evidence that it ever stood at all.

Five-stone circles are a distinctive Cork and Kerry tradition, smaller and more precisely arranged than the sprawling megalithic rings found elsewhere in Ireland. They typically consist of two portal stones flanking an entrance, two further stones completing the ring, and a recumbent axial stone lying flat and low on the south-western arc, its position thought to relate to lunar or solar alignments. The Grenagh example, catalogued by Seán Ó Nualláin in his 1984 survey of Cork stone circles, followed this pattern closely. Earlier accounts described two entrance stones and an axial stone, with a prostrate slab lying between them at the centre. The orthostats, the upright stones, ranged from roughly 0.9 to 1.2 metres in height and up to 2.2 metres in length, giving the whole structure an overall axial measurement of about 4.4 metres, oriented approximately northeast to southwest. It was a modest monument by any measure, set quietly into a valley landscape rather than on an exposed hilltop, the kind of site that might have persisted unnoticed for millennia had circumstances been different.

What makes this particular loss worth noting is precisely its ordinariness. The site was not exceptional in scale or fame; it was one of dozens of similar small circles distributed across mid Cork. Yet its disappearance within living memory is a reminder of how fragile the prehistoric record can be, and how much of what was once mapped and described no longer exists on the ground to find.
