Stone circle – five-stone, Mill Little, Co. Cork

A stone circle does not need to be large to feel deliberate.

The five-stone circle at Mill Little, Co. Cork measures just 2.5 metres along its internal axis, yet everything about it suggests careful arrangement. Its main axis runs northeast to southwest, an alignment common among West Cork's prehistoric stone circles and thought to relate to solar or lunar events. The circle itself is complete, which is relatively uncommon, though the two entrance stones, set end-on to the circumference rather than face-on, have been broken down to stumps. The three intact uprights, known as orthostats, stand between 0.75 and 1.2 metres high.

What makes this site more than a lone ring of stones is the broader complex it belongs to. Sitting in a flat area of rough pasture about 50 metres west of the Cooleenlemane river, the circle is accompanied by three boulder burials to the southwest and a pair of standing stones to the south. Boulder burials are a monument type particular to southwest Ireland, consisting of a large capstone resting directly on the ground or on low supports, generally interpreted as covering human remains from the Bronze Age. The grouping here, documented by O Nualláin in 1984 and Roberts in 1988, suggests this was a purposefully composed ritual landscape rather than a scattering of unrelated monuments. The concentration of different monument types within a single field implies sustained use of this particular patch of ground over a considerable period.
