Stone Cross, Ballynaguilkee, Co. Waterford

In a pasture field in County Waterford, beside an east-facing slope that drops gently toward the Finisk River, there is a church site that once held something worth recording and has since lost it. A stone cross base and part of its shaft, decorated with interlace and fret patterns, the kind of geometric knotwork and angular key designs associated with early medieval Irish stonework, were documented here and are now gone. What remains at the site is their absence.

The cross was recorded by George Victor Du Noyer, a nineteenth-century geologist and antiquarian who worked extensively across Ireland documenting archaeological monuments, many of which were already in poor condition or at risk of disappearing. His record of the Ballynaguilkee cross base, later cited by Peter Harbison in his 1992 survey of Irish high crosses, is now the primary evidence that the piece existed at all. The base itself was modest in scale, roughly 35 centimetres by 25 centimetres and just over 20 centimetres high, but the decorated surface it carried connected it to a broader tradition of carved ecclesiastical stonework associated with early Christian sites. The church site to which it belonged, and which it presumably once marked or adorned, sits on level ground above the river valley.
