Stone row, Cartrún An Phóna, Co. Galway

Four stones of white quartz, stretched across seven metres of boggy ground, make up one of Connacht's quieter prehistoric alignments.

Two of the four have fallen, but from their original positions and estimated heights, it is clear they were never uniform: the tallest would have stood around 1.5 metres, while its neighbours ranged from roughly 0.75 to 0.9 metres. That deliberate variation in height, running along a north-south axis, gives the row a slightly irregular rhythm that distinguishes it from more symmetrical examples elsewhere in Ireland.

The row sits on the valley floor of Gleann Glaise, a short distance north of the Bealnabrack River, in a low-lying area that has remained wet and marginal land for millennia. The choice of pure white quartz is notable; the material appears repeatedly at prehistoric ceremonial and funerary sites across Ireland, and is thought to have carried particular significance for the communities that erected such monuments. What makes the setting more intriguing still is the presence, in the same valley, of three fulachta fiadh, a type of ancient cooking site typically identified by a mound of heat-shattered stone and a hearth, usually found close to water. These are among the most common prehistoric monuments in Ireland, and their clustering here alongside the stone row suggests the valley was a place of some sustained activity, whether seasonal, ceremonial, or both. The association was noted by Seán Ó Nualláin in 1988, in his systematic study of Irish stone rows.
