Stone row, Roosky (Straid Ed), Co. Donegal

In a dry corner of an otherwise marshy field in Roosky, County Donegal, stands a curious alignment of ten stones stretching from northeast to southwest.

This ancient stone row presents an intriguing mix of upright stones, recumbent slabs, and loose boulders, with several fashioned from distinctive white quartz. The alignment begins at its northeastern end with a prominent standing stone measuring 1.05 metres in height, surrounded by three smaller stones at its base. From there, the row continues through a varied sequence: a pile of four loose stones, a low boulder at 30 centimetres, and a substantial boulder reaching 90 centimetres high.

The middle section of the alignment features a particularly striking combination of quartz stones, including a recumbent piece at 70 centimetres, an upright quartz stone at 80 centimetres, and a smaller upright stone at 60 centimetres. Interestingly, three of these central features sit slightly out of line with the rest of the row, suggesting either intentional placement or later disturbance. The alignment concludes with a loose stone, an upright quartz stone, and finally a recumbent quartz stone measuring half a metre, with a notable spread of additional stones scattered between the final two markers.

The site's setting adds to its archaeological interest, occupying a rare patch of firm ground in what would have been challenging terrain for ancient peoples to navigate. Several linear stone features to the northeast of the main alignment likely represent the remnants of abandoned field walls from later agricultural use, demonstrating the site's continued importance through different historical periods. First documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal in 1983, this stone row offers a tangible connection to the prehistoric communities who once inhabited this corner of Ireland, though its exact purpose; whether ceremonial, astronomical, or territorial; remains a matter of speculation.
