A stoup, the small stone basin fixed near a church entrance to hold holy water for the blessing of those entering, was once part of a medieval church on this site. Local memory recorded it as a holy water font, which is a reasonable description; the two terms are often used interchangeably, though a font is the larger vessel used in baptism, while a stoup is the modest wall-mounted or free-standing basin familiar from Catholic churches. Whatever it was called, it has not been formally located.

The church it belonged to stood in Garryrickin for centuries before the last remaining wall was demolished in 1973, a date recent enough to feel almost careless. Medieval churches in rural Ireland frequently survived as roofless shells well into the twentieth century, their carved stonework, grave slabs, and liturgical objects gradually dispersing into farmyards, field walls, and private gardens. The stoup from Garryrickin may have followed a similar path. Current thinking is that it probably remains somewhere in the vicinity of the former church site, though its exact whereabouts are unconfirmed.

The site sits on a ridge, which was a common preference for early ecclesiastical foundations, offering visibility and a degree of separation from the surrounding landscape. Whether the stoup is still somewhere close by, built into a wall or sitting in a corner of a field, is a question that local knowledge may yet answer.
