Strong Stream Mill, Milford, Co. Carlow

A seven-storey rubble stone mill with a crenellated parapet is an odd enough survival on its own, but what makes this building worth pausing over is what happened inside it in 1891: it became the source of the first public electric lighting in an inland town anywhere in Ireland or Britain.

The battlements, more usually associated with castles or follies, sit oddly atop what was, at heart, an industrial building, and that mismatch between martial appearance and practical function is part of what gives the place its character.

The mill itself was built around 1820, an eleven-bay structure with segmental-headed window and door openings, the kind of long, plain industrial elevation typical of the period's grain and corn mills before mechanisation moved elsewhere. Its later life is the more remarkable chapter. Around 1891 the building was converted into a hydro-electric generation plant, harnessing the flow of water that had once turned milling machinery to instead power a dynamo. Carlow was consequently lit by electricity before any other inland town in either country, coastal cities and larger urban centres having generally led the way in early electrification. The original generating equipment did not last indefinitely; the plant was dismantled at some point before 1990, but rather than being left derelict, the site was re-commissioned and extended around 1990, when a concrete block turbine house was added alongside the older stone structure. That contrast, rubble stone against concrete block, mill parapet against modern plant, marks the building as a working site rather than a preserved relic, one that has continued to do the job it was adapted for over a century ago.
