In a drain cut through a Westmeath bog near Killavally, a scatter of ancient wood emerged from the peat face: brushwood and twigs, some no thicker than a centimetre, others just over four centimetres across, spread across a width of roughly one and a quarter metres.
What makes the find quietly puzzling is that it resists easy classification. A handful of the pieces run east to west, suggesting at least a hint of deliberate arrangement, but the majority lie in no discernible pattern, and there is nothing structural enough to say with confidence what, if anything, was once built here.
