Structure – peatland, Kilmore, Co. Longford

In the bogland around Kilmore in County Longford, there is a deposit of old wood that may or may not be anything at all.

That ambiguity is, in its own quiet way, rather interesting. Irish peatlands have preserved an extraordinary range of ancient material, from timber trackways and dugout boats to wooden idols and butter buried in ceramic vessels, and every fragment of worked or deposited wood found in a bog carries at least the possibility of significance. This particular deposit sits at the edge of that possibility, neither confirmed nor dismissed, just noted and left.

The wood came to attention during a field survey in 1989, recorded on the basis of a personal communication from B. Raftery, a name well known in Irish wetland archaeology. The assessment that followed was cautious: the evidence was considered insufficient to warrant acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. That kind of careful non-conclusion is actually common in wetland survey work. Peat bogs across Ireland contain naturally deposited timber, wind-thrown trees, root systems, and organic material that can superficially resemble human activity. Without further investigation, distinguishing a deliberately placed wooden structure from a fallen branch preserved by the anaerobic conditions of a bog is genuinely difficult. The work of identifying and recording such ambiguous finds was carried out in the late 1980s and 1990s by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit, based at University College Dublin, which systematically surveyed bogland across several midland counties during that period.
