Structure – peatland, Timahoe, Co. Kildare

Preserved beneath the bogland of Timahoe in County Kildare, a modest but quietly puzzling timber structure has survived the centuries in conditions that would have destroyed it anywhere else. Peat bogs act as natural preservatives, their cold, acidic, and oxygen-poor environment keeping organic material intact long after it would have rotted away in ordinary soil. What emerged here is a carefully laid arrangement of wood, nine metres long and two metres wide, sitting just twelve centimetres below the surface.

The structure is made entirely of birch, combining transverse and longitudinal roundwoods, essentially trimmed branches and small trunks laid across and along one another, with finer brushwood woven through. The individual pieces are not large, the roundwoods reaching a maximum diameter of about seven centimetres, the brushwood ranging from one to six centimetres across. What makes them notable is the evidence of deliberate shaping: many of the pieces had their ends worked into wedge and chisel points, suggesting careful preparation before being set in place. That kind of finishing work implies the structure was not a casual or improvised arrangement but something built with a specific purpose in mind. Whether it functioned as a trackway across soft ground, a platform, or something else is not recorded, but the pointed ends hint at timbers driven or pressed into waterlogged peat to hold the construction steady.
