Structure – peatland, Timahoe, Co. Kildare

In the boglands of Timahoe in County Kildare, a small cluster of worked timbers survives in conditions that would have destroyed them almost anywhere else. Peatland is, in its way, a remarkable preservative, its acidic, oxygen-poor environment capable of holding organic material for centuries or even millennia in a state that ordinary soil would never permit. What has been recorded here is modest in scale, roughly a metre wide and only seven centimetres deep, but the care visible in its construction suggests it was made with a specific purpose in mind.

The structure consists of several worked roundwoods, the majority cut from yew, each averaging around seven centimetres in diameter. Yew is a notably dense and durable timber, long associated in Ireland with longevity and sacred spaces, though its use here may simply reflect what was available and suitable for the task. One of the roundwoods, measuring thirty-five centimetres in length, has had its end shaped to a chisel point, a detail that implies deliberate joinery or the need to drive the timber into a substrate. Whether this was part of a trackway, a platform, a fish trap, or some other functional structure, the notes do not say with certainty, and the fragmentary nature of what survives makes interpretation difficult.
