Structure – peatland, Tomisky, Co. Longford

Preserved in the peat of Tomisky in County Longford is a spread of ancient timber that resists easy classification.

Measuring roughly six metres by five and a half, it takes the form of a shallow, irregular deposit, barely a single piece of wood deep, made up of around forty-seven roundwood pieces and twenty or so lengths of brushwood. What makes it curious is not its size but its ambiguity. The majority of the elements were broken when recorded, and little appeared to be in its original position, meaning whatever purpose this arrangement once served, the peat has not preserved it neatly.

The wood itself tells a varied story. Willow, hazel, ash, alder, birch, and apple-type timber were all identified among the material, suggesting either a casual gathering of whatever grew nearby or a structure assembled from multiple sources over time. Metal-cut toolmarks were evident throughout, placing at least part of the activity in a period when iron tools were in use. Two sherds of post-medieval pottery recovered from the surrounding peat point further towards disturbance, raising the possibility that the deposit was disturbed or reworked at some point after its original construction. A second structure was recorded just 3.4 metres to the north-east, hinting that this was not an isolated feature but part of something larger or repeated across this stretch of bogland. Peatland structures of this kind, laid timber platforms or trackways built to cross soft ground, were common across Ireland from the prehistoric period well into historical times, and the bog's anaerobic conditions are what allow organic material like wood to survive for centuries or even millennia where it would otherwise decay entirely.
