Structure, Pollaphuca, Co. Galway

In County Galway, in a townland called Pollaphuca, there is a structure significant enough to have been recorded and classified, yet presently so incompletely documented that almost nothing about it can be said with certainty.

That gap is itself a kind of fact. Pollaphuca, a placename found in several parts of Ireland, derives from the Irish poll an phĂșca, meaning the hole or hollow of the pĂșca, a shape-shifting spirit of Irish folklore often associated with liminal, uncanny terrain. Whether the local landscape earned that name from a cave, a pool, or some other feature of the ground is not recorded here, but the name alone suggests a place that caught people's attention long before anyone thought to survey it.
