Temple Patrick, Teevenacroaghy, Co. Mayo

On a summit in County Mayo, a chapel once stood that left no trace above ground.

Named Teampull Patruig, or Temple Patrick, it appeared on Ordnance Survey maps as recently as 1920, yet today nothing of it remains visible at ground level. What is known of its appearance comes from a single, remarkably precise description recorded in 1838, before it disappeared entirely from the landscape.

The 1838 Ordnance Survey Letters captured the chapel at a moment when it was still in active use. It was a tiny structure, just 4.9 metres long and tapering from 2.4 metres wide at the eastern end to only 1.5 metres at the entrance, with an east gable barely 2.6 metres high. Votive nails and rags were pressed between the stones, the accumulated offerings of pilgrims who came to kneel before the stone altar, repeating fifteen Aves and one Creed as part of a pattern, the traditional round of prayers performed at a sacred site. A rough enclosing wall surrounded the whole. When it was built is not known. Excavations carried out in 1994 and 1995 uncovered the remains of an early medieval church close by, suggesting that the summit had been drawing worshippers for well over a thousand years, with successive oratories or chapels replacing one another across the centuries. The church that now occupies the summit was built in 1905 and extended in 1962, continuing a sequence of sacred building whose earlier chapters have largely vanished into the hillside beneath it.
