Holy Sites & Wells

Tobercleveen, Glendree, Co. Clare

In the waterlogged ground of Glendree, enclosed by woodland and tucked into the angle where a stream bends sharply back on itself, there is a holy well that has effectively ceased to exist above ground.

It cannot be seen. It leaves no obvious trace. What remains is a name, a map reference, and a quietly persistent question about what, exactly, a "well" becomes once the landscape absorbs it entirely.

The well was recorded in 1839 by Curry, who noted it in the townland then written as Gleandrith and gave its name as Tubber Cleibhin, meaning Well of the Little Basket, adding that some local people regarded it as a holy well. Holy wells in Ireland were typically natural springs associated with a patron saint or with older folk traditions of healing and pattern days, the annual gatherings of prayer and ceremony that once gave many such sites their social and ritual significance. By 1842, the Ordnance Survey had mapped it clearly, naming it Toberclebeen and placing it to the east of a stream. Later OS editions shifted its label to "Toberclebeen (site of)", that small parenthetical doing considerable work: acknowledging that something was once there while quietly conceding it can no longer be confirmed.

The spot sits on generally level, poorly drained ground in an ungrazed area. Within the right-angle bend of the stream, the land rises just slightly and drains a little better than the surrounding bog, leaving a patch that is relatively free of overgrowth. Whether that subtle topographical difference marks the well's original location, or simply explains why a well might have been sited there in the first place, is the kind of question this place refuses to answer directly.
