Toberdavin, Moyard, Co. Galway

A holy well that waters cattle is not quite what the tradition promises.

Toberdavin, set into a recess in a roadside field bank near Moyard in Connemara, survives as a natural spring, but whatever ritual life it once had appears to have quietly drained away. No offerings are visible at the site, and its current role is a functional one, serving livestock through the summer months rather than pilgrims at any season.

The well sits on the western side of a track, roughly forty metres north-west of a nearby grave site, a proximity that is unlikely to be accidental. Holy wells in Ireland were frequently located close to early burial grounds and church sites, forming small sacred clusters that predate the formal organisation of parishes by centuries. The name Toberdavin follows the common Irish pattern of tobar, meaning well, combined with a personal or saint's name, suggesting a dedication that has not been firmly identified in surviving records. The spring itself occupies a hollow in the field bank, the kind of low, unassuming feature that could easily be passed without a second glance if you did not know to look for it.
