Tobermochulla, Kilgory, Co. Clare

Sitting in a stretch of waterlogged, rush-filled pasture in County Clare, this small holy well is easy to overlook entirely.

It measures just half a metre across and sits barely deeper than two feet, its sides and base lined with moss-covered stones. Two loose flagstones lie nearby, one to the south and one to the west of the opening, their placement suggesting some past ritual or practical significance that is no longer fully legible. A modest fenced enclosure, roughly five metres by three, marks the well out from the boggy ground around it.

Holy wells in Ireland were typically dedicated to early Christian saints and served as focal points for local devotion, often associated with patterns, the communal gatherings held on a saint's feast day that combined prayer with socialising. This well carries the name Tobermochulla, a form that appears on Ordnance Survey maps as far back as the 1840 edition and again on later editions through to 1921, suggesting continuous recognition of the site across the better part of two centuries. What makes its situation quietly curious is that it is not unique in Clare; there are several wells sharing the same name scattered across the county. Mochulla, also known as Mocholmóg, was an early Irish saint associated with Tulla in east Clare, and the repetition of dedications to the same figure across a single county reflects how deeply local saints could root themselves in a landscape, with multiple sites absorbing the same devotional name over time.

The well sits close to a land drain that runs east to west, and the poorly drained ground around it means the approach on foot is likely to be soft underfoot, particularly in wetter months. The small fenced enclosure makes the well itself straightforward to identify once you are in the right field, though the surrounding pasture gives little else away.
