Tobermurry, Ardbeg, Co. Kerry

On the Dingle Peninsula, a holy well once existed that was barely larger than a domestic bucket, roughly two feet across, covered by a single flat stone, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Known in Irish as Tobar Muire, meaning Mary's Well, it no longer exists; the site has been destroyed, leaving behind only the documentary traces of what was once a small but evidently meaningful place of local devotion.

Holy wells in Ireland were typically sites of pattern days, from the Irish "pátrún", a local religious gathering held on a saint's feast day or other significant date in the liturgical calendar. At Tobermurry, that day was the 15th of August, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is fitting given that she was the patroness of Stradbally Parish. On that date, people would formerly have made rounds, a ritual practice involving a prescribed number of prayers recited while walking a set path around the well, often in silence and sometimes barefoot. The Ordnance Survey Name Books and the later work of folklorist Caoimhín Ó Danachair both record this tradition, placing it within a wider pattern of Marian well devotion found across the country. That so modest a feature, a stone-capped spring barely wider than an outstretched arm, could anchor an annual gathering speaks to how thinly the sacred was once distributed across the Irish landscape, attached not only to churches and shrines but to the smallest irregularities of the ground.
