Tobermurry, Ballynagrallagh, Co. Wexford

In a quiet pastoral valley in County Wexford, a holy well dedicated to the Virgin Mary has effectively vanished into the ground.

Not ruined, not overgrown in any dramatic sense, simply not visible at ground level in the surrounding pasture. The name, Tobermurry, combines the Irish tobar, meaning well, with Muire, one of the Irish forms for Mary, making the dedication plain enough even before you consult any map.

What gives the site a particular curiosity is the discrepancy in how it has been recorded over time. Both the 1839 and 1925 editions of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map mark it, labelling it in gothic lettering as Tobermurry, yet they place it at different locations. That cartographic inconsistency, across nearly a century of surveying, suggests either a shift in local memory about exactly where the well lay, or genuine difficulty in pinning down a feature that was already elusive at ground level. The well sits in a small east-west valley, with the headwaters of a stream running roughly ten metres to the north, which is typical of holy well placement in Ireland, where such sites are frequently associated with springs or watercourses. Around 170 metres to the south lies the Courthoyle church site, a proximity that is unlikely to be coincidental. Sacred wells and early ecclesiastical sites in Ireland were often deliberately paired, the well serving devotional or ritual functions tied to the nearby church community.
