Tombs & Memorials
In the chancel of the ruined medieval church at Moone, County Kildare, the remains of a chest tomb lie gathered in nine separate fragments. A chest tomb is essentially a box-shaped funerary monument, typically raised above floor level and carved from stone, used to mark the burial of a person of some local standing. The fact that this one has survived at all, even in pieces, is quietly remarkable.
