The piece is a panel from a chest tomb, the kind of freestanding rectangular monument, resembling a stone box or sarcophagus, that was commonly erected over graves in medieval and early modern Ireland. This particular panel measures roughly 41 centimetres high and 35 centimetres wide, and only five centimetres deep, giving some sense of how it would have sat flush against the side of a larger structure.

The panel is said to have originated at the church in Owning, County Kilkenny, before finding its way to the South Tipperary County Museum, where it is now held.
