Tomb – chest tomb, Owning, Co. Kilkenny

A fragment of carved limestone that began its existence in a Kilkenny churchyard now sits in a museum across the county border in Tipperary, separated from the tomb it once formed part of and from the church it was made to adorn.

The piece is a panel from a chest tomb, the kind of freestanding rectangular monument, resembling a stone box or sarcophagus, that was commonly erected over graves in medieval and early modern Ireland. This particular panel measures roughly 41 centimetres high and 35 centimetres wide, and only five centimetres deep, giving some sense of how it would have sat flush against the side of a larger structure.

The panel is broken: the upper corners on both the left and right sides are missing, and the stone has been sheared away along its left edge. Where the surface survives intact, a narrow plain margin runs along the upper, lower, and right-hand borders, framing the central decoration. That decoration consists of the symbols of the Passion, the collection of objects associated with the crucifixion of Christ, such as the cross, nails, crown of thorns, lance, and similar imagery, which appear frequently on Irish funerary monuments from the late medieval period onward. The panel is said to have originated at the church in Owning, County Kilkenny, before finding its way to the South Tipperary County Museum, where it is now held.

For anyone interested in seeing it, the panel resides in the museum collection rather than in the field, which means a visit to the museum rather than to the Owning site itself would be the place to look for it. The church at Owning remains a separate point of interest for those tracing the object back to its original context.
