Tower, Oiligh, Co. Mayo

There is a certain irony in recording a place that no longer exists, and yet the absence itself tells a story.

At Oiligh in County Mayo, a tower once stood at the junction of two estate walls, part of an arrangement of five such structures that lined the boundaries of the Bingham Castle estate. It was demolished in the early twentieth century and left nothing behind; no stonework, no foundations visible above ground, no trace for a visitor to read.
