Mills
Along the quieter stretches of Connacht countryside, the remnants of a tuck mill at Kilsallagh in County Galway mark a particular kind of industrial past that rarely gets much attention.
A tuck mill, also known as a fulling mill, was used to finish woollen cloth by beating it with heavy wooden hammers driven by waterpower, a process that thickened and felted the fibres to make the fabric more durable and weatherproof. These mills were once a practical necessity in rural Irish communities where wool was a primary textile material, but they have largely vanished from the landscape or survive only as fragmentary remains.
