Violet Hill, Herbert Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow

The building's gabled bays, its pointed arches, and its patterned slate roof all speak to a mid-Victorian appetite for Tudor revival detail, applied here with a fairly heavy hand. It is the kind of house that rewards a second look: what first reads as a plain two-storey block turns out to be a careful arrangement of projecting bays, canted windows, and decorative bargeboards, the timber trim fixed beneath the eaves that was a hallmark of the style.

The house was built in 1862 to designs by William Fogerty, an architect working in the Tudor idiom fashionable among country house builders of the period, which favoured steep gables, mullioned or pointed windows, and elaborate chimneys over the plainer Georgian forms that had gone before. That taste is evident throughout Violet Hill, from the panelled front door set beneath a pointed arch and topped with a plain fanlight, to the brick chimneystacks with their boldly corbelled caps, the brickwork stepped outward in courses before meeting the clay pots. The window openings mix flat and pointed arches, most fitted with one over one timber sash frames, and the whole is finished in stone dressings that, like the brick, has since been painted over. A stable block to the west of the main house belongs to the same period and has, like the house itself, been converted into apartments, the estate's working buildings finding a second life alongside its principal residence.

Despite the subdivision of the interior into nine separate apartments, the exterior remains substantially as built, set within a garden that has matured well beyond its Victorian planting. The cast-iron rainwater goods survive, as does the slate roof laid in bands, and the overall massing of gables and bay windows is still legible despite the practical compromises of adaptive reuse. It stands as a reminder that many of Ireland's country houses did not fall into ruin but were instead quietly absorbed into new domestic uses, their architectural ambition intact beneath a coat of paint and a change of purpose.
