Wall monument, Abbeyland, Co. Galway

On the outer west wall of a friary church in Abbeyland, County Galway, there is a recess that once held something important, and now holds nothing at all.

The perpendicular west doorway nearby is considered the principal architectural feature of the church, and set into a rectangular panel above it was a coat of arms belonging to the Bermingham family, alongside an inscription that was already only partially legible by the time scholars got to it. When the site was inspected in April 2018, the recess itself was clearly present, but the coat of arms and inscription had vanished entirely, most likely because they were carved or inscribed on a separate tablet that had been fitted into the recess and has since been lost or removed.

The inscription, while still partially visible in the early 1990s, named Gaulterius de Bremwycham, who died in 1428. The Berminghams were a prominent Anglo-Norman family with deep roots in Connacht, and Gaulterius appears to have been commemorated here in stone. However, the memorial raises an immediate historical puzzle: the doorway itself appears, on architectural grounds, to be later in date than 1428, which suggests the panel may have been added as a retrospective memorial rather than installed at the time of his death. The perpendicular style of the doorway, characterised by vertical and horizontal tracery and a squared-off aesthetic that became widespread in late medieval Irish ecclesiastical architecture, would support a date sometime after the mid-fifteenth century at the earliest.

What remains today, then, is an absence framed by stonework. The recess is still legible as a feature, the doorway still stands, but the evidence connecting the wall to Gaulterius de Bremwycham has gone. It is the kind of monument that rewards a close look precisely because of what is missing from it.
