Water mill, Tullamoylin, Co. Tipperary

On the River Dolla in County Tipperary, a limestone disc painted grey and sitting in a farmyard is one of the few remaining traces of a mill that was once significant enough to be recorded on the Down Survey, the ambitious mid-seventeenth-century mapping project that catalogued land ownership across Ireland in forensic detail.

The mill appears on that survey alongside a castle and a deserted settlement, the three features clustered together in a way that hints at a small but once-functioning community at Tullamoylin.

The physical evidence left behind is fragmentary but telling. During river work on this stretch of the Dolla, large wooden planks were removed from the water, almost certainly structural remnants of the mill itself. Two millstones were subsequently recovered from land to the north of the site. One, which had a central perforation and would have been the rotating upper stone in operation, is now missing. The surviving stone lacks that central hole and measures 0.58 metres in diameter and 0.1 metres in thickness. Its dimensions are consistent with millstones recovered from horizontal water mills, a type of mill in which a horizontal wheel, turned directly by the current, drove the upper millstone without the need for gearing. This simpler technology was widespread in early medieval Ireland and persisted in use for centuries. That one of the two stones appears to have been unfinished when recovered raises the possibility that it was never actually put to use, perhaps abandoned during manufacture or left over from a repair that never happened.

The surviving millstone, painted grey and sitting in the nearby farmyard, is limestone rather than the harder sandstone or imported quartz that later industrial mills tended to favour. It is an understated object, easy to overlook, but it connects this quiet stretch of the Dolla to a much longer history of milling, settlement, and the slow erasure of both.
