Well, Dunmaniheen, Co. Kerry

Some holy wells are hard to find.

This one, in Dunmaniheen in County Kerry, cannot be found at all. Recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map under the name Toberacreen, it sits, or once sat, in the garden of a dwelling house to the north of the Killarney to Killorglin road. By the time anyone thought to formally note its existence, local knowledge already confirmed it had been gone for many years. It is, in essence, a mapped absence, a place that exists more fully in cartography than in the ground itself.

The name Toberacreen follows the familiar pattern of Irish holy well placenames, deriving from "tobar", the Irish word for well, combined with a qualifying element that often points to a patron saint or a local devotional tradition. Whether this well once drew pilgrims, cured ailments, or marked a boundary in the ritual landscape of the parish is no longer recoverable from what survives. What remains on the map is simply the name, pinned to a spot in a private garden. Roughly twenty-five metres to the southwest, on the opposite side of the road, there is a cliff-edge fort, the kind of promontory enclosure that uses natural topography as part of its defensive perimeter. It is tempting to read some significance into the proximity of a fort and a well, though that particular connection belongs to speculation rather than record.
