Wellington Bridge Railway Station, Wellington Bridge, Co. Wexford

There is something almost improvised about Wellington Bridge Railway Station, a building whose walls are sheathed entirely in corrugated iron rather than the stone or brick one might expect of an Edwardian station house.

The effect is deliberate rather than makeshift: the material was chosen for speed of construction, and the result is a compact, four-bay structure with a pitched roof that oversails the walls, sheltering the platform beneath its eaves. Timber pilasters mark the corners and frame the doorways, giving a building of essentially industrial materials a curiously ordered, almost classical rhythm.

The station opened in 1906 as part of the Fishguard and Rosslare Railway, a line built by the Fishguard and Rosslare Railways and Harbours Company to link the south Wexford coast with the wider rail network and, by extension, with the mail boat crossing to Wales. Wellington Bridge was not unique in its design; identical stations went up at the same time at Campile and Duncormick, following a standard prototype intended to get the line running efficiently across multiple stops. Both of those sister buildings have since been demolished, which leaves Wellington Bridge as a surviving example of a design once repeated along the route. Red brick chimney stacks with cavetto capping, a decorative concave moulding, and terracotta pots rise from the corrugated roof, while cast-iron rainwater goods and timber bargeboards to the gables round out a building that combines utilitarian construction with careful detailing. Inside, timber boarding survives alongside much of the original fabric, a rare degree of continuity for a structure over a century old.

The station's setting adds to its interest as much as the building itself. It stands on an island platform with an adjacent signal box and footbridge, both original to the ensemble, forming a self-contained group that has been kept intact within the streetscape of the village. Together they give Wellington Bridge a coherence increasingly hard to find on the Irish rail network, where stations of this vintage more often survive as fragments than as complete working compositions.
