Yoletown Mill, Yoletown, Co. Wexford

Two mills stand attached to one another at Yoletown, one of four bays and two storeys with a half-attic tucked beneath its roofline, the other rising to five bays and four full storeys.

Both are disused now, their window openings holding only the remains of timber fittings, their roofs still slated but stripped of most of the ironwork that once carried rainwater away. It is an odd pairing to come across, this low building and its taller neighbour sharing a single rectangular footprint, as though two separate ideas about milling had been fused into one structure.

The complex dates to at least 1840, and the differences between its two halves tell their own story of use and adaptation. The northern mill, lower and simpler, has limewashed rubble stone walls and a hipped, gabled roof with ridge tiles now soft with lichen; its corners are finished with flush quoins concealed into the stonework rather than left proud, a detail that speaks to a certain care in the original build even where the walls themselves are plain rubble. The southern mill is the more ambitious of the two, rendered rather than limewashed, its gable finished with coping and its eaves still carrying fragments of cast-iron guttering. Both buildings share the same square-headed window openings and the same concealed dressings, suggesting they were conceived together or at least built to match, despite the marked difference in scale. Set within its own grounds in south County Wexford, the mill complex belongs to a landscape once shaped by small-scale industrial processing, the kind of enterprise that depended on local grain, local water, and local labour long before larger centralised mills made such places redundant.

What survives now is essentially a shell of that working past, the machinery gone and the roofs beginning to show their age, but the architectural bones remain legible enough to read the building's history in its stonework alone: the plainer, older-feeling limewashed range to the north, and the taller, more finished rendered range to the south, standing together as two stages of the same enterprise.
