Platform, Drumfad Lower, Co. Donegal

Atop a broad, low hill in Drumfad Lower, County Donegal, sits a curious triangular platform that has puzzled locals and archaeologists alike.

The monument, measuring roughly 10 to 12 metres on each side, rises modestly from the surrounding pasture with stone-faced scarps that stand between 30 and 50 centimetres high. Its earthen construction and flat, grass-covered top give it an unassuming appearance, yet the careful stonework visible along its western edge, where medium to large stones form a close-set row, hints at deliberate construction rather than mere field clearance.

The platform commands an enviable position in the landscape, with sweeping views across Lough Swilly to the north and northeast, where the Inishowen peninsula rises in the distance. To the south and southeast, Knockalla Mountain dominates the horizon, spanning the entire width of the Fanad Peninsula. Despite its strategic location and the fact that locals know the surrounding field as the 'Fort field', the monument's original purpose remains uncertain. Local tradition holds that it served as a lookout point, which seems plausible given its commanding views across the lough and surrounding countryside.

Today, the platform shows signs of both age and neglect; a partly sod-covered concentration of stones occupies its southwestern corner, whilst loose stones scatter across its central area, and blackthorn scrub has taken root along the southern half of its eastern scarp. Curiously, this intriguing feature never made it onto any edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, leaving it as something of a hidden gem in the Donegal landscape, known primarily to those who work the land and the occasional archaeological surveyor who happens upon it.
