What remains today is a shadow of its former self; centuries of ploughing have worn away much of the ancient stonework, leaving only the eastern wall standing to any significant height, about 1.5 metres at its tallest point. The site has something of an identity crisis in the historical record, first appearing on Ordnance Survey maps as a fort, then later mysteriously relabelled as a children's burial ground.

The structure itself is what archaeologists call a cashel, a type of stone ringfort that would have served as a fortified farmstead during the early medieval period. These circular enclosures, built with dry stone walls, were home to farming families and their livestock between roughly 500 and 1200 AD. The possible entrance on the western side would have been the main gateway into this defended homestead, whilst the scattered stones visible in the interior might indeed mark later burials, lending some credence to its subsequent identification as a burial ground.

Today, nature has largely reclaimed the site, with vegetation growing thickly over the remaining stones. Despite its weathered state, the cashel offers a tangible link to Donegal's early medieval past, when such fortified farmsteads dotted the landscape. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted in 1983, catalogued this and hundreds of other monuments, ensuring that even as these ancient structures gradually succumb to time and agriculture, their stories remain part of the county's rich archaeological record.
