Ringforts
In the townland of Toorard in County Mayo, there sits a cashel, a type of ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks, that has quietly outlasted the civilisation that raised it.
Cashels of this kind were typically constructed during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. The circular or oval wall offered protection for livestock and inhabitants alike, and hundreds of such structures survive across Ireland, many so worn by time and weather that they blend almost seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
