Ringfort (Rath), Aghamore, Co. Kerry

There is a field in Aghamore, County Kerry, where a ringfort once stood, and where now there is nothing to see at all.

No earthwork, no hollow, no suggestion in the grass that anything circular ever occupied the corner of that enclosure. The site belongs to a category of place that archaeology quietly acknowledges: the recorded absence, known only because someone mapped it before it disappeared.

A ringfort, or rath, is a type of enclosed settlement typically dating from the early medieval period, formed by one or more circular banks and ditches. They are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, numbering in the tens of thousands, and yet many have been lost to centuries of farming. This one in Aghamore was still legible enough to be recorded on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1841 to 1842, where it appears as a circular enclosure sitting in the corner of a field, its southern sector already slightly clipped by a field bank running east to west. By the time the 1916 edition of the OS map was produced, only a small fragment of that southern arc remained visible as a cartographic trace. At some point after that, even the fragment went. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, confirmed what the successive maps had implied: no visible trace remains today.

What makes this site worth noting is not what it preserves but what its trajectory reveals. The 1841 to 1842 mapping captured the ringfort at a moment when agricultural reorganisation was already eating into it, the field bank cutting across its southern edge like an indifferent boundary. The gap between the two map editions, roughly seventy years, was enough to reduce it from a recognisable enclosure to a remnant, and a few more decades finished the job. The maps themselves are now the monument.
