Ringfort (Rath), Ballinacor, Co. Wicklow

In the Ballinacor townland of County Wicklow, a ringfort sits beneath the surface of the landscape, invisible to anyone walking above it.

No earthwork rises from the ground, no bank or ditch breaks the grass, and yet the site is documented: a circular enclosure roughly 25 metres across, occupying a gentle south-east-facing slope as it has done for well over a thousand years.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead and occasional refuge. This particular example at Ballinacor came to wider notice through the Ordnance Survey Letters, a remarkable nineteenth-century project in which scholars travelled county by county to record local history, placenames, and antiquities. John O'Flanagan's volume covering Wicklow, published in a compiled edition in 1928, includes a reference to this site. The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map adds a further complication: a laneway had already been cut directly through the enclosure by that date, bisecting what had once been a coherent circular form. That intrusion, combined with whatever levelling or erosion followed, accounts for why nothing now registers at ground level.

The fate of this rath is not unusual. Countless ringforts across Ireland were gradually absorbed into the working landscape, their banks robbed for field boundaries or simply ploughed flat over generations of agricultural use. What makes the Ballinacor example quietly interesting is the precision with which its disappearance can be traced: a laneway on a map from 1838, a note in a surveyor's letter, and a circle that once measured roughly the width of a modest house plot, now gone from sight but not entirely from record.
