This one is remarkable for what does not. At Ballinclemesig in north County Kerry, a ringfort once stood to the south-east of a neighbouring enclosure, its circular earthen banks presumably visible to anyone passing through the landscape. By the middle of the nineteenth century it was considered significant enough to be recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1842. Sometime in the following decades, it vanished entirely, leaving no surface trace whatsoever.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when formed from earthen banks rather than stone, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. Tens of thousands once existed across the country, and a great many have disappeared through agricultural clearance, land improvement schemes, or simple erosion over time. The Ballinclemesig example follows that pattern, though its disappearance is unusually well documented by the gap between two maps. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, places it southeast of a related enclosure site and notes that it is absent from the 1916 Ordnance Survey edition, meaning it was lost to the record within a window of roughly seventy years. Whether that loss came from deliberate levelling of the banks or gradual farming activity is not recorded.
