Ringfort (Rath), Ballydonohoe, Co. Kerry

At Ballydonohoe in north County Kerry there is a ringfort that you cannot see.

Walk the ground and there is nothing to show for it; no earthen bank, no ditch, no raised outline, nothing that would catch your eye or your boot. The enclosure exists, it is just that the land has quietly absorbed it.

A ringfort, or rath, is typically an early medieval farmstead enclosed by one or more circular earthen banks, the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland. This one in Ballydonohoe was absent entirely from the first detailed Ordnance Survey mapping of the area, carried out in 1841 to 1842, suggesting it was either already too degraded to record or simply missed. It does appear on a later OS edition, described as a circular enclosure, and there is a further complication noted on the ground plan: a stream flowing south-west clips the site slightly on its south-eastern side, which may account for some of the erosion. What is most striking about this particular site, however, is the gap between what the aerial record shows and what a visitor standing in that field would encounter. Aerial photography picks up the enclosure quite clearly, presumably through differential crop or soil marks that become legible only from altitude, yet at ground level there is no visible surface trace whatsoever.
