Ringfort (Rath), Carrowkeel, Co. Mayo

On a low ridge in County Mayo, a large circular earthwork sits quietly absorbed into the edge of a modern rectangular field, its ancient geometry half-swallowed by hedgerow, stone wall, and the logic of contemporary farming.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that was the dominant settlement form in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but this one in Carrowkeel has a particular quality of gradual assimilation, its edges pressed into service as field boundary, fence line, and windbreak, while the interior continues as ordinary pasture.

The platform itself is substantial, measuring approximately 40.5 metres on its northwest to southeast axis and 43.6 metres northeast to southwest, defined by a scarp, essentially a steep-sided earthen bank cut into the slope rather than built up from the ground, that still reaches two metres in height at the southwest. The northeastern section has fared less well; a portion of the scarp and some of the adjacent interior were quarried out at some point in the past, though the damage has long since grassed over. The bank is at its lowest and most slumped on the north-northeast side, while the southeast and south retain a slightly raised inner lip, a detail that suggests the original form was carefully shaped rather than simply piled. The exterior slope on that southern arc is now densely covered in hawthorn and ash, and at the west the earthwork disappears entirely beneath a north-south field fence topped with a stone wall. The ridge-top position gives good views across undulating terrain, the low-lying hollows between rises remaining wet ground, which would have made this elevated spot a practical as well as a defensive choice for whoever first enclosed it.
