The ground is flat, the field unremarkable, and nothing rises from the surface to suggest that anything was ever there. What makes the place quietly strange is that it is, in a meaningful way, a monument to its own disappearance.

A rath, or ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period in Ireland as a farmstead or place of settlement. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but the one at Clashmelcon did not make it. It appears clearly on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1841 to 1842, marked as a circular enclosure, and it is still visible on the maps produced for the 1915 to 1916 revision. By 1977, when aerial photographs were taken by the Geological Survey of Ireland, the site could still be read from the air, its outline preserved in the slight variations of soil and crop that persist long after earthworks have been ploughed down. At some point between the mid-twentieth century and the present, it was levelled entirely. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, records that no surface trace survives.

What remains, then, is a paper monument: a sequence of maps and photographs that preserve the shape of something the landscape itself no longer holds. The 1841 cartographers recorded it without knowing they were making a kind of farewell document. The aerial photographers in 1977 caught it at the last stage of legibility. Now it exists only in archives and survey records, a circle that was once a home.
