Ringfort (Rath), Cloghaun More, Co. Clare

In the townland of Cloghaun More, in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape doing what ringforts have done for well over a thousand years: enduring quietly, largely unannounced.

These circular enclosures, known in Irish as raths, were the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches thrown up around a domestic settlement. Tens of thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, yet each one represents a particular family, a particular patch of ground, a particular set of choices about where and how to live.

The rath at Cloghaun More belongs to this vast, distributed record of early Irish rural life. Clare is well supplied with such monuments, many of them folded into field boundaries or half-absorbed by later agricultural activity, their original profiles softened by centuries of weathering. The townland name itself, Cloghaun, derives from the Irish for a small stone or stony place, which may or may not tell us something about the ground conditions the original builders were working with. Beyond that, the specific history of this particular enclosure, its dimensions, its condition, any finds or features associated with it, remains to be fully documented in the public record.

What can be said is that its presence in Cloghaun More places it within a county where the evidence for early medieval settlement is unusually dense, shaped by the thin limestone soils of the Burren to the north and the more fertile lowlands further south and east. Whether this rath occupies raised ground with clear sightlines, or sits modestly in a hollow, whether its banks are crisp or barely traceable, are details that belong to the place itself rather than to any published account currently available.
