Ringfort (Rath), Cloncumber, Co. Kildare

Somewhere in the flat, bog-fringed farmland of County Kildare, a circular earthwork rises one to two metres above the surrounding pasture, its outline unmistakably deliberate against a landscape that has otherwise been thoroughly reworked. What makes the ringfort at Cloncumber quietly odd is not its age but its current condition: a monument that survived centuries of agricultural change has ended up planted with pine trees, its interior essentially swallowed by forestry, with cleared field debris dumped along the one stretch of perimeter that remains open.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. Most consist of a raised circular platform surrounded by one or more earthen banks and an outer ditch, known as a fosse, with a single entrance gap. The Cloncumber example fits that pattern closely. A 1972 description recorded a roughly circular enclosure with an internal diameter of 36 metres, of the platform type, surrounded by a fosse and traces of a bank, with an entrance on the north side. It sits on a low, gently sloped east-west ridge in what is now a very large cleared field, with bogland pressing in from the north-west, north-east, and south-east. That combination of elevated ground above wet surroundings is a classic early medieval site choice, the slightly raised position offering drainage and visibility in an otherwise difficult terrain.

For anyone approaching across the open field, the pine plantation growing directly on the monument means the earthwork is easier to sense than to read. The raised ground is visible, but the trees obscure the interior and make the full circuit of the fosse difficult to trace. The clearest section is along the northern perimeter, though that is also where dumped material from field-clearance operations has accumulated, further complicating any attempt to read the original ground surface.
