Ringfort (Rath), Comeragh, Co. Waterford

There is no visible entrance. That single detail, quietly noted in the archaeological record, gives this modest earthwork an air of deliberate mystery. The rath at Comeragh sits on a south-westerly facing slope at the eastern foothills of the Monavullagh Mountains, tucked into the upper valley of the Tay river, and whatever gap once allowed people in and out has long since been absorbed by the surrounding ground.

A rath is an early medieval Irish ringfort, typically a circular or subcircular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead and place of security for a family and their livestock. This one is roughly subcircular in plan, measuring about 34 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, and is covered now in grass. Its defining bank is slight, best preserved along the downslope eastern to southern arc, where it reaches about 1.1 metres in external height, though internally it rises only around 0.4 metres above the enclosed ground. Beyond the bank, faint traces of an external fosse, a shallow ditch roughly 3.5 metres wide and no deeper than half a metre at most, survive on the east to west side. These are modest dimensions by any measure, suggesting a small agricultural settlement rather than anything of particular status, yet the fosse indicates that whoever built here made at least some effort at formal enclosure and demarcation.
