Ringfort (Rath), Corraneden, Co. Cavan

In a field in Corraneden, County Cavan, a circular raised platform sits quietly in the landscape, its origins stretching back well over a thousand years.

It measures thirty-five metres across the interior, enclosed by a substantial earthen bank with a shallow fosse, or ditch, running around its outer edge. What was once the entrance has been lost entirely, absorbed into the gradual reshaping of the land over the centuries.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly the sixth to the twelfth century. Raths were enclosed farmsteads, built by individual farming families to protect livestock and signal social status rather than to serve any serious military purpose. Thousands once existed across the country, and Cavan has a notable concentration of them. Most were constructed from earth and timber rather than stone, which is why so many have softened into the gentle, almost imperceptible rises that catch the eye of anyone who knows what to look for. The bank here is described as substantial, suggesting the enclosure was once a fairly prominent feature, even if time has dulled its original profile. The fosse would have added both a physical and a symbolic boundary, the dug earth thrown inward to heighten the bank above it.
