Ringfort (Rath), Derry, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Derry in County Mayo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its circular earthworks tracing the outline of a life lived more than a thousand years ago.

These enclosures, known in Irish as raths, were the standard farmstead of early medieval Ireland, roughly from the fifth to the twelfth century. A bank of raised earth, sometimes accompanied by a fosse or outer ditch, defined the boundary of a family's world: their house, their livestock, their small claim on the land. Tens of thousands of them were built across the island, and yet each one occupies its particular patch of ground with a quiet singularity, a circle pressed into a field that has since been ploughed, grazed, and largely forgotten.

Ringforts are so numerous in Ireland that they can begin to seem unremarkable, yet their very abundance is part of what makes them extraordinary. This one, recorded in the townland of Derry, belongs to a county that contains a significant scatter of such monuments, many of them sitting on the drumlin and bogland topography of the west. The rath form itself varied considerably: some enclosed simple wattle-and-daub houses, others were the seats of minor lords, and a small number developed into more elaborate multivallate structures with two or three concentric banks. Without more detailed survey information for this particular site, its scale and condition remain open questions, though its survival into the archaeological record at all suggests at least some visible trace remains above ground.
