On a narrow strip of level ground between Tralee Bay and the northern slopes of the Slieve Mish mountains, the land holds a faint but legible memory of early medieval occupation.

A slight, roughly circular swelling in the field surface, rising no more than thirty centimetres above the surrounding ground, is all that remains visible of what was once a ringfort, one of the circular enclosed farmsteads that were the standard unit of rural settlement in Ireland from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. It never made it onto the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map, which means that by the time systematic mapping began in the nineteenth century, the site had already faded to the point of invisibility to those who were not looking closely.

At its widest, the raised area extends to about 45 metres across, though its precise limits are hard to fix with confidence. Within that footprint, set towards the western side, sits the more tangible remnant: a circular hut-site whose stone walls have collapsed into a band of rubble roughly 13.3 metres in overall diameter. The interior, about 6 metres across, is itself choked with fallen stone, and at one point on the south-east arc, a single course of what may be the original inner wall face survives for about 2 metres. The bank of collapsed material stands around 0.4 metres high and spreads between 2 and 5 metres wide. The description comes from J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region of the Dingle Peninsula, a study that documented sites across one of the most archaeologically dense landscapes in Ireland. The location at the base of Derrymore Island, pressed between the bay and the mountain slopes, hints at a community that worked a coastal environment and chose this narrow margin of sheltered ground deliberately.
