Ringfort (Rath), Drumellihy, Co. Clare

In the townland of Drumellihy, in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape doing what ringforts have done for well over a thousand years: quietly persisting.

These circular earthwork enclosures, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a raised bank and ditch enclosing a domestic space where a farming family would have lived, kept animals, and gone about their daily lives. There are thought to be tens of thousands of them across the island, yet each one occupies a specific patch of ground with its own particular history, and the one at Drumellihy is no exception.

The difficulty with this particular example is that almost nothing has been formally published about it. It sits within a wider county that is exceptionally well supplied with early medieval remains, Clare being a place where the density of ringforts, holy wells, and early ecclesiastical sites reflects centuries of settled agricultural life. Without excavation records or detailed field notes in the public domain, it is not possible to say with confidence when the Drumellihy rath was constructed, who occupied it, or what, if anything, survives of its original earthworks above ground. What can be said is that the name Drumellihy itself is likely derived from Irish, with the element droim, meaning a ridge or back of land, suggesting the kind of slightly elevated, well-drained ground that early medieval farmers actively sought out when choosing where to settle.

For anyone passing through this part of Clare, the broader landscape repays attention even where a single monument frustrates closer inquiry. Ringforts in this region often survive as low, grassy banks, sometimes only fully legible from an elevated vantage point or in low winter light when shadows pick out the contours of the ground.
