Ringfort (Rath), Drummuck, Co. Cavan

In a field in Drummuck, County Cavan, a raised circular platform sits enclosed by two earthen banks, one genuinely ancient, one conspicuously not.

That distinction matters. The inner bank is described as very substantial, the product of considerable organised labour, while the outer bank is clearly of modern origin, added at some later point for reasons that the ground itself does not explain. Between the two runs a wide, deep fosse, the defensive ditch that gave this kind of enclosure much of its practical purpose. The southeast side preserves what survives of the original entrance, a deliberate break in the inner bank paired with a causeway crossing the fosse, the point through which people and animals would have passed in and out of daily life here, perhaps fifteen hundred years ago.

The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort enclosed by earthen rather than stone banks. These were the standard farmstead type of early medieval Ireland, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and several thousand survive across the country in varying states of preservation. Most enclosed a single family's household and outbuildings. What makes the Drummuck example worth a closer look is the combination of features still legible on the ground: a well-defined double enclosure, the original entrance alignment still readable in the southeast, and within the interior, the possibility of a souterrain. A souterrain is an underground passage or chamber, typically stone-lined, used in early medieval Ireland for storage, refuge, or both. Whether the one suggested here is intact, partially collapsed, or simply a hollow in the earth that resembles one, the available detail does not confirm.
